In the 1920s, Provence attracts immigrants looking for work in the quarries or farmland. Many blend with the locals and establish permanent residences, such as Toni, an Italian who has taken up residence with Marie, a Frenchwoman. Even the most organized living is susceptible to boredom, friendship, love, and hate, and Toni becomes involved in a web of increasingly emotional connections. For there is Fernand, his greatest friend, but there is also Albert, his domineering boss; Sebastian, a sturdy Spanish farmer, but there is also Gabi, his young rogue relative; Marie, but there is also Josefa.
