Novelist Dave Hirsh, who is a heavy drinker, comes home after a long absence. Dave's brother encourages him to find a partner and connects him to English instructor Gwen French. Moody Dave dislikes his brother and spends his time with Bama Dillert, a nightlife enthusiast and professional gambler. Dave becomes angrier as he struggles between the adoring Gwen and Ginny Morehead, a carefree woman who loves him.
