Werner Herzog, a German filmmaker, begins production on his 1982 epic "Fitzcarraldo" but quickly encounters major difficulties, ranging from casting issues to his own obstinate unwillingness to utilize special effects. After reshooting significant portions of the film due to a recasting of the lead actor, his crew must next haul an old-fashioned steamboat over a mountain using just human power. With an almost insane determination, Herzog tries to achieve his vision, pledging to see the project through to completion – even if it means his demise.
