When the woman he loves throws over Michael McCann, he becomes a part of a misanthrope and a miser, spending all his spare money about coins. Living in the exact same town is an affluent family with 2 sons: Tanny and John. Tanny's a wild boy, that John cannot restrain, and one night he breaks in to the house of McCann, and steals the gold and disappears, which nearly confirms McCann's distrust of mankind. But then, a young woman dies from the snow outside McCann's house, along with her small daughter makes her method into McCann's house and into McCann's life and heart. He raises her, and names her Matilda, finding a new joy in life together along with his daughter. But them can rip apart.
